Yesterday, Mr. Wonderful and I made a resolution about three months too late and decided to go back to the gym.
Every January, we repay our gym dues, so we thought about it and came to agreement that, if we were going to pay for it, we probably should start using it. So, we set our alarm for 5:30 a.m. and groggily drug our out-of-shape and weary bodies to the gym.
I am typically a morning person but I am not accustomed to moving this quickly. Get up, throw your prepacked bags in the car and go! I prefer the “slowly get up, pour a cup of coffee and sit on the couch while watching The Today Show” method. I just need my morning adjustment time.
Today is day 2 of our workouts. I woke up this morning, stretched and realized rather quickly that my entire upper body was in acute pain. Then I coughed and thought “when did I break my ribs?” I had excrutiating pain in that area and didn’t remember being beaten with a baseball bat or anything during the night. Then it all came back to me. Crunches and leg lifts. Those were my enemy!
Apparently, I am in pretty bad shape. But that will remedied!

Along with the suffering we’re putting our bodies through, we are also trying to revamp the eating program at our household. So if you start to see healthier recipes that I am posting, please bear with me while I work through withdrawal of butter, sour cream, half and half and all that is good and decent.
This has become my favorite breakfast ever, and once I bought the ingredients, it has become a quick dish to whip up at work while still feeling yummy and comforted.
Start by spooning about 3/4 c. plain non-fat yogurt into a bowl. Now add 1/2 scoop of your protein powder. You can skip this step if you like. I need the extra protein to help my aching muscles heal and it adds a boost of vanilla flavor. I also add it to my smoothies! An added plus -whey protein has been shown in studies to help strengthen your immune system. What more can you ask for? Now, if you like your yogurt sweet, add a little sweetener. Store bought yogurts with fruit have an awful amount of sugar in them. You really have to watch the labels. Yes, I am reading labels now….sigh. In this recipe, I control my own, and it’s even better than the pre-made yogurts. Now give your bowl a good stir with a spoon. Make sure everything’s mixed in well.
Pick your berry, today I’m using raspberries, but strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, or really any fruit that makes your heart go pitter patter. I even use frozen berries, thawed in mine sometimes in the winter. As they thaw, the juice really mixes in with the yogurt and is sooooo good! Spoon your berries over top of your yogurt. Sprinkle your nuts over your berries. My personal favorite is raw walnuts. You could use any nut you’re partial to though. Here, I’ve used chopped pecans. Granola is also wonderful and I’ve used multiple crunchy type cereals as well. Then to cap it off, drizzle some honey over your nuts and berries.
Yes, that is the biggest container of honey you can buy. My mom usually brings me a bigger one from Michigan when she comes, but our family goes through unreal amounts of this stuff so I had to buy some!
Mom, I’m beggin! Bring me more honey please!
You will never miss a bad-for-you breakfast again. This makes me feel like I am not deprived in any way of the food I’m giving up.
The 5:30 alarm on the other hand?
I’m not over that yet.
